Some of the greatest innovations have been developed from the combination of existing tools in different and unique ways that expose new solutions to existing problems. Where there is demand there is often a clever way to meet that demand with innovation. Today everyone wants or should want to include some personalization into their products and services. As a result there is a booming cottage industry in technology with companies selling highly scalable and general solutions to personalization and recommendations. For many companies, going to an outside vendor may not be the best option because of issues like privacy and price. I will review some common tricks and tools that are inherently useful in writing Hadoop/HBase jobs. However it is the combination of these tools that can be formed into a recipe for doing recommendation and personalization at any scale. In this talk I will provide a personalization recipe that is simple enough for all developers, even without background in data mining, to exploit and innovate recommender systems to their own unique needs.
