Data Science can evolve products, providing companies with a strategic planning capability. Such usage of Data Science represents a new way of recognizing customer needs in terms of product design and experience, but conditions are rarely suitable. In part, this is because few business leaders would think such is possible, mush less allow such to drive design, resources, budgets, user experience, and marketing. Providing that level of functionality requires that Data Science be independently capable of modeling, engineering models, and operationalizing models into business practice. Each function requires a diversity of specialists to support each other in getting to familiar solutions. Researchers can then simulate the unfamiliar, which business owners must be prepared to embrace. Previous appointments to build Data Science at companies like AIG and Amazon were never intended for such purposes, but they each highlighted the necessary, but missing components. Data Science at Plated shows how strategic planning can come from such a team when it is the intended purpose.
