Price promotions are a widespread tool to increase conversion in free-to-play games and can be witnessed across the board (e.g. Farmville Tropic Escape, Hay Day, Diamond Dash, CSR Racing 2). They however seem to be non-existent in some top grossing darlings, e.g. Clash of Clans. Is Supercell missing out in Clash of Clans or are they doing exactly the right thing? When, and how, should developers offer price promotions? When should they refrain from doing so? This talk discusses these questions based on a framework of price promotions in free-to-play games, hints at best practices and offers a view into a future of data-driven pricing.
